Can't recompile the Red Hat 7.2 kernel (2.4.9-13)

It was giving that message whenever I issued ANY 'make' command, even when I 
entered 'make dep' or 'make config'!

Fortunately, I got VMWare to work (don't know how I did it).  I don't need 
to re-compile the kernel now.
