I'm gonna have to recommend Gandi.net, as well.

Except they feel nothing like that to me; even the old internic took days or
weeks to update stuff; typically not hearing back for a few days on whether
or not they even received the message.  With Gandi.net I know within seconds
that the request is being processed and it typically happens within hours
(always less than 24 hours)

Yes, their policy states that the domain actually belongs to you, for
starters.  (everybody else has terms where you seem to be renting it from
them)

I've got a few domains of my own that I use Gandi for and I've helped some
other people out with their domains hosted at Gandi, and it's all seemed
quite nice to me.  All nicely automated, secure and customer-centric.
