That 2.4.18 kernel has all the usb drivers you need for the camera.

I would recommend gphoto http://gphoto.sourceforge.net  -  It is a gnome gui 
application but believe it has a command line interface.

Give that a go before you go stuffing dollars into my pocket......  I have BIG 
pockets....

I didn't get the can't abide KDE or Gnome....  It sure would help if you had 
gnome at least.... since you are downloading images and such....

The OS is disposable...  your data and custom applications are what is 
important...  Cut the cord to the OS.
