[NBLUG/talk] What controls the "prompt"?

This one is rather pesky....

Is this box up to date with updates and patches or is it stock?
How about you run strace on gnome-terminal from a konsole.

$ strace -o mytrace.txt gnome-terminal

As soon as the terminal comes up kill it.

Sift through the mytrace.txt file for awhile.... then go close to the end and
see if there are any clues there... with writing to tmp or read, write, open
errors, socket errors, locale errors or such, there may even be font errors
in there.

Does the box run runlevel 5 - graphical login or runlevel 3 - text mode?

What are the perms on /tmp?

Just trying to gain a bit more information and explore some other paths for
permission problems.
