Got it, thanks! Not sure why the driver install didn't work when I tried to
boot to init 3 before.

I was going to ask if you were using Nvidia. FYI anytime you install a new
kernel you will need to also install Nvidia drivers for that kernel.

For this reason I try to avoid using Nvidia chipsets. Hopefully one day
Nvidia will realize how much of a pain that is and will change the license
so the drivers can be distributed with the kernel.

You might also want to modify /etc/inittab and change the default run level
to 3. At least until you are done, then you can go back to 5.

The only diff between 5 and 3 are the services started. So aside from X is
there is a service that is not being started and you need it, start it or
add it as a service to be started under run level 3. I usually will do it
manually but there are many tools to dial in the different services and run
levels.
