I have used iwconfig to set ssid/essid on cards:
# iwconfig eth1 essid "fun"

Have you tried command line explicit setting yet?

(BTW augie, I have 3 passwords from Swordsfish (movie) included on the
uselesstrivia.html page. I think our prefessor was looking for the one
named "vernam" - you know, like the vernam cipher... ;-)
