TAoCP, vol. 2, p. 214, exactly half way down the page, Dr. Knuth writes, "...we shall work with base b, excess q, floating point numbers with p digits:...." Later in the same context: "Using excess-50 floating decimal numbers with 8 digits,...." What is "excess-50"? -- Steve Zimmerman
