Dear Folks:

My problem reocurred, so I'm following up with the error messages that
were printed to the console, and a possible clue. When I boot the
computer, I no longer get a graphical login screen, but it defaults to
the blue console with a login propmt. Maybe I've broken gdm somehow?

Here's as much as I could get off the screen last time this happened
(any typos are mine, as I could'nt cut & paste):

FAMOpen failed, FAMErrno=0
Window manager warning: Broken client! Window 0x1a00026 (mutt) changed client leader windo or SM client ID
ALSA lib pcm_hw.c: 1055:(snd_pcm_hw_open) open /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p failed: Device or resource busy
The Application 'gnome-session' lost its connection to the display :0.0;
most likely the X server was shutdown or you killed/destroyed the application
ICE default IO error handler doing an exit(); pid=2800, errno=0
Window manager warning: Lost connection to the display ':0.0';
most likely the X server was shutdown or you killed/destroyed the application
The Application 'gnome-panel' lost its connection to the display :0.0;
most likely the X server was shutdown or you killed/destroyed the application
The Application 'nautilus' lost its connection to the display :0.0;
most likely the X server was shutdown or you killed/destroyed the application
The Application 'gnome-terminal' lost its connection to the display :0.0;
most likely the X server was shutdown or you killed/destroyed the application
The Application 'Gecko' lost its connection to the display :0.0;
most likely the X server was shutdown or you killed/destroyed the application
/usr/X11R6/bin/xinit4: Connection to X server lost
waiting for X server to shutdown

[Then my user prompt appears]

Thanks again.
-dave.

p.s. sorry this isn't threaded properly -- at the time I'm writing
this, my first post has yet to appear in the list. -ds
