It could be a limitation of your video card - not enough video ram.
What color depth are you using?  Look for something like:
DefaultDepth    24
If you have it set to 32 then drop it to 24 and see if that helps.
If it's 24 then try 16.  If it's 16, then your stuck because
8 bit color displays suck.
