Some have argued that a good drop shadow highlights the current
window/menu, making it easier to find where you are, and that
transparency enables you to display one window without completely
obscuring another, facilitating multitasking. <shrug>

I haven't decided yet if I agree or disagree with either opinion.

(FWIW, Enlightenment DR17 supports drop shadows even without X.org.
Last time I tried it, though, DR17 was nowhere near stable enough for
everyday use.)
