[NBLUG/talk] Major bug in new "discover" packages

I found out the hard way that the latest version of "discover1" and its
related packages in Debian/testing cause my computer to freeze up in the
middle of hardware detection, thus making it impossible to start the
computer, even in single-user mode! In order to make my system usable
again, I had to boot from a Knoppix CD, chroot to the hard disk,
uninstall the "discover1" packages, then install the old versions of
them from my netboot CD.

If you're running Debian/testing, unless you are even more comfortable
with such things as I am (and you're not running a machine where uptime
is critical), I'd suggest you lock the current version of "discover1",
"discover1-data", and "libdiscover1", so that they don't get
automatically upgraded and potentially crash your computer.

I cannot guarantee that upgrading will cause your computer to freeze up;
it may have been something unique to my configuration. Even so, I
thought it worthwhile to post a warning here.

For the true Linux hackers out there, I am using version 1.7.3 of
discover (discover-data version 1.2004.11.09), and I encountered the bug
when I tried to upgrade to 1.7.6 (discover-data version 1.2004.11.27).
Perhaps the bug has been fixed in a later version (I see that there is a
version 2.0.6 of discover in the repository), but I need this computer
to have as much uptime as possible, starting next Monday.
