Another idea: Go with a live CD. Cook up a custom Knoppix CD (or some other 
live CD--I've heard good things about Mepis) that has all the appropriate 
drivers for her computer (and whatever desktop software she likes) 
"pre-loaded", so that It Just Works when she gets it. Let her play with it, 
decide if she likes it, and go from there.

(Who somehow broke /cdrom (and consequently broke apt-get) this week, and 
fixed it! Yes, Linux is so exciting...)
