[NBLUG/talk] Modem lights don't

I'm a noob with fc2, installed last summer at an installfest ( thanks,
Mark!). The Linux box is still merely a diversion so my problem doesn't
deserve much of your time. But here goes: There is an applet called
Modem Lights with an icon on the taskbar. If I click it, it asks if I
want to connect and if I say yes it "activates" the connection (seen in
Network Device Control). The next request for an internet resource
(e.g., I click on a URL) causes the modem to dial and connect. So far so
good, but the applet can't seem to figure out that we are now connected.
None of the lights come on and if I click again (while connected) it
asks "Do you want to connect?". The preferences tab points to 2
scripts, /sbin/ifup and /sbin/ifdown. They both exist and work; at
least I can execute "/sbin/ifup att_net" in a terminal window and the
connection activates (ifdown deactivates it). But I get no modem status.
The modem is an Actiontec PCI hardware modem (NOT a WinModem). Ideas?

Thanx,
--Bruce--

PS: The screensavers are AWESOME!
