Debian: My choice. Huge package selection. Free. Easy to
update/upgrade.

SuSE: very large package selection. Good distribution.

Mandrake and Fedora are also popular. I've used all of these at one
time. Fedora is very bleeding edge. The current verion, Core 3, has
over 3 GB of updates already.

OpenOffice runs on Windows and Linux. Compatibility with msword docs,
and powerpoint files is good, but far from perfect. It's as huge and
slow as office. On Linux there is gnumeric for excel files. It works
well and is fast. There is also abiword for msword docs, another faster
stand alone program.
