I think it's the implementation of Xwin/XFree/whatever in Ubuntu. Also, 
on my last install for the first couple of reboots, Init would stay 
loaded and show up high utilization in top. Then it went away and now it 
runs fine. Dell GX110 PIII 88? Mhz, 512mb, "color" monitor (he,he).
