That's a bit tricky, since the computer probes the monitor when it starts
up.  It's one of those things that nicer KVM switches sometimes handle
better.

I think somebody else suggested sending your xorg.conf file; that'd be a
good start.  Maybe also /var/log/Xorg.0.log from a boot with the KVM
switched to the Ubuntu machine and also a copy from a boot without the KVM
switched to the machine.

However, in the meantime, you can always hit ctrl-alt-backspace (backspace,
not delete) at the graphical login prompt (gdm/xdm) to force X to restart
and reprobe, which should fix the problem until the next time you reboot.
