I use fvwm (http://www.fvwm.org).  Very lightweight, very customizable.
Kyle uses fluxbox, which is also very lightweight and very customizable.

I got used to fvwm way back in the '90s and I really don't want to
change.  I'm using a configuration that evolved from the default SuSE
5.1 fvwm desktop.
