Just to clarify, I used xrandr to manually tweak my nvidia settings while hot-plugging an external monitor on a laptop. When the nvidia drivers work, they're nice, but I do like to play occasionally.

Thanks for the suggestions. I now have time to get back to my video problem.
I'll post an update on what I get with apt-get -f, sudo
    nvidia-xsettingss, and xrandr, which I don't think will help.
The GTX280 card is very capable. So I don't think that is an issue.
