Yes, I think this machine has UEFI and I downloaded Ubuntu 13, which won't boot in W 8...

Does your laptop use UEFI and are you working with Ubuntu 12.10 or later?

Good morning Dan,
As long as you don't want to dual boot, then I would recommend doing a live boot w/ your installation disc first, then when you are ready to install, make sure you have access to an Ethernet port on a router so you can make all necessary updates. What is the specific hardware and future Linux spec's at this time? Another option would be to install Oracle's VM and just build your Linux machine after booting to Windows.

Thank you,

Michael

I bought a new laptop, a Lenovo with Windows 8, which I find very frustrating to use. I want to install a USB hard drive with Ubuntu, change the boot sequence in Windows so it will boot Linux on startup, but I'm worried about the winmodem. I've been lurking on this site for years, studied Unix and am familiar with the basic concepts of Linux and own an Asus Linux netbook, but I'm wondering how much support I can count on for this conversion and how easy it will be to get WiFi working....Thanks in advance for your help.
