Actually, lucent just recently released linux drivers for their "WinModem"
I don't have the URL off hand, but
I know it's out there, saw it on slashdot and downloaded a copy for the
internal winmodem in my Laptop.

Really your best bet is with an ISA Hardware Modem, you'll have best luck
with the setup and better performance.
I recomend the US Robotics Sportster or the internal modem from Zoom.
