I speak unfavorably on CUPS in only that it is different from lprng and is
not the same as the older lpr style for setup. I hear from many that the
process of setting up CUPS vs lpr/lprng from a "zero-knowledge to use"
path is better and easier. There are many granular options in lprng for
printing and processing.

(As an example, I was able to set up a print relay that filtered incoming
data to an email account, processed it, and then passed it over tcp/ip to
a remote printer shared on the campus network (from home). )

Would you consider an obvious solution that does litle to leverage your
knowledge of the problem and how to fix it? Uninstall the CUPS package and
its config files. Then verify all of its config files are gone, and then
re-install and re-configure it.
Another suggestion, examine the config options and try to rebuild the
network printer.

If you can print from the linux box with smbclient, but not with cups,
that strongly suggests a CUPS misconfiguration. If cups references and
uses smnclient to print, make sure it know where to find it.

If you have the box at school (IE a laptop) I can take a look if you want.

I have been meaning to learn how to use CUPS anyway.
