Not sure from your wording if the intent is to keep kernl/people or junk it, but if
possible, it'd be nice to keep it active.

Yeah, junk Ximian.
Regarding Augie's suggestion for a collection, count me in.  I've certainly
gotten at least $10-$20 worth of use from having a nice, fast local mirror.
