[NBLUG/talk] Module loading/unloading in Debian?

When I used Red Hat Linux, I found that kernel modules just seemed to
work. If I had a piece of hardware I wanted to use, and the kernel
driver for it was available as a module, it seemed to work whenever I
used it. But something about Debian ("sarge") is different.

Having built a 2.6 kernel with lots of modules this afternoon, it has
become quite clear that I'm missing something about handling modules in
Debian. I find that I have to use the "modprobe" command more than a
few times whenever I start the computer just so that my floppy drive,
Ethernet card, etc., will function when I start any real work.

I know I must be missing something simple, but I don't know what it is!
