Without more information I would look at the following:
1) Do you have a switch/hub that does 10/100?
2) Also, do you have ethernet cards on either box?

If both are "yes" then consider passing args to the loading of the modules
for your ethernet cards such that they will be forced to use 10 or 100,
but not autosense. Autosensing has been a problem for many cards and
swicthes.

The machine could have been busy with heavy disk access or the CPU may
have been busy.

If this was wireless, you could have had some interference that just
happened to coincide with your moving data in one direction but not the
other.

There are probably many others...

I am glad that it is working for you. If you notice other network services
seem to be slow then we can better isloate it.
