Don't forget about the Red Hat announcement that they're dropping
support for Red Hat Linux and focusing more on the enterprise
environment.  The cost of that software is pretty expensive!

The Fedora project seems like the route to go rather than Red Hat.

I totally agree with Mike tho, Debian would be an excellent route for
someone with lots of UNIX experience.  And don't forget that you only
install the distro once.
