hi Todd,

it seems that Red-Hat gets told how to look up numeric addresses in two
files, /etc/nsswitch.conf and /etc/host.conf.

check /etc/nsswitch.conf and it should say
files dns

and /etc/host.conf should say
hosts, bind

it wouldn't matter if it has other services mentioned so long as files and
hosts are first and dns and bind are after that. note there is no comma
in nsswitch.conf, but a comma is required in host.conf.

a Red-Hat person should really be helping you at this stage, but the
documentation i have for Red-Hat is that the hostname is set in the
file /etc/sysconfig/network. the HOSTNAME= should be the fully-qualified
hostname and optionally have DOMAINNAME= set to the domain portion only.
you can also set the default gateway there.

static routes can be set in /etc/sysconfig/static-routes but you probably
only need the default route.
