sounds like one of the locking mechanisms gone awry. similar things can
happen with mozilla when it is killed with out warning it leaves files
open or created which should be closed or non-existent the next time it
starts up. check out my .ICEauthority:

[augie at gohan augie]$ ll .ICEauthority
- -rw------- 1 augie augie 788 Oct 14 07:00 .ICEauthority
[augie at gohan augie]$ cat .ICEauthority
ICE3local/gohan.pear:/tmp/.ICE-unix/dcop1844-1060821951MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-

i removed a bunch of junk, but the important part is still there, note
the reference to /tmp .

i'm guessing that if .ICEauthority says there is a file named such in
that location, then there better be such a file, or it'll choke.

if it were me i would log out of kde, and from a terminal mov
.ICEauthority to ICEauthority.old, then remove any files in
/tmp/.ICE-unix/ . but that's just me. good luck.

augie.
