Bob,

This certainly sounds like a nameserver issue.

Do you have the nameserver's IP in /etc/resolv.conf ?
Do you have hostnames in /etc/hosts ?

Using just "route" does a reverse name lookup so if DNS is funky that will
be funky too. Pings work just fine because you are pinging the IP so no
DNS is involved. I bet if you try pinging the domain names it will be all
screwy.
