You can get a new Dell laptop for $650-$675. I did. 

I looked at used and refurbs, but basically the life of keyboards, 
batteries, and backlight sort of made new much more appealing.

Dells have great Linux compatibility, especially SuSE 9.0 Even the 
synaptics touchpad features are automatically detected. And power 
management is good, runtime is the same as under WinXP.
