I guess I'll always be a newbie.  I have a good ol' time with an AMD K6 200 
and 48 megs of RAM...plus a cheap old video card (forget what kind).  Open 
Office.org Writer takes two minutes tops to load (way slower than emacs or 
abiword...most of the useful work is done using a console...).  I use KDE on 
Slackware 8.1.

This old machine does everything I need.  It is a file server.  I use e-mail.  
I update my webpages.  I mess with programming.  I have used similar, slower 
machines, as printer servers with Samba.

Your machine is faster, has more RAM, and probably a better video card than 
mine...I think...Just depends on what you want...

Could the distribution be what's slowing you down?  I know Open Office is 
slow...I think there's some Java going on in the background...Maybe if you 
add more swap space things would pick up?

Like I said, I'm a newbie, too.
