I have had the same experience; my solution is a mixture of karm for
short term memory, and Backpack for long term memory.

Basically I use karm to track how long I work on a particular project,
then when I am done I copy the details to a Backpack page for that
client under the heading "Unbilled Hours".

If you haven't tried it yet, I really do recommend Backpack. If you
find yourself keeping little bits of paper around, or you just love to
