The machine I'm thinking about is a friend's laptop running Ubuntu
that barely has enough memory to run Ubuntu in the first place. :-P

When he lets it sleep overnight, it appears to be locked up after it
wakes because everything has been swapped to disk. At least, I assume
that's what causes the problem.

I don't have the machine in front of me, so I can't check what the
swappiness is like.
