This is a new, combined, Local & Global announcement, for everyone
within distance of actually attending the UC Berkeley physical meeting.

Because I'm now opening this meeting up to anyone, anywhere (even
participate from your home), this one announcement is for
1) anywhere participants
   (whom I call "Global", even if they are right here in the SFBA), &
2) the Berkeley physical location meeting.

=====  CONTENTS:  =====
=====  1) LOCAL HIGHLIGHTS
=====  2) NEW "LOCAL / REMOTE-GLOBAL" GENERALITIES
=====  3) LOCAL SPECIFICS
=====  4) GLOBAL & FULL DETAILS

=====================================================================
=====  1) LOCAL HIGHLIGHTS
===== LOCAL BERKELEY in person meeting at U. C. Berkeley =====

Come to the exciting UCB location meeting! (See location specifics
below.)

===== NEW: UC STUDENTS - Ongoing starting this month, I'm announcing
this meeting to student groups. Now that students are back in school,
students interested in Free SW might come to this meeting. Here's a
great chance for you to do all the regular meeting things, plus perhaps
pass on important knowledge to students, or learn _from_ the students
the latest things they are working on, & that interest them.

===== NEW: UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA FUTURE MEETINGS:

Come plan & work toward the creation of monthly local meetings at ALL UC
campuses.

Hello Californians - The University of California is YOUR university.
Created centuries ago by Californians to serve Californians, the
University is a resource for us, and an educational service for
students.

Right now only Berkeley & Davis have Linux/FreeSW meetings in close
conjunction with a UC campus. Wouldn't it be great if every month ALL
the UC campuses had such a meeting? Even better if they were
simultaneous with BerkeleyTIP-Global, & all Californians could get
together in Virtual Space for one GREAT BIG MEETING.

Come help plan & work to make this a reality. 5PM to 6 PM time slot at
this meeting.

=====================================================================
=====  2) NEW "LOCAL / REMOTE-GLOBAL" GENERALITIES
===== GLOBAL: Other Bay Area physical meetings, or from home.

Wouldn't it be great if everyone who wanted to attend a BerkeleyTIP
meeting could? To bring that closer to reality, for people who can't
affort the time or cost of traveling to Berkeley, I'm opening the
meeting to everyone, everywhere.

I invite people to join us from their home via IRC & VOIP, or set up
their own local meeting. (See details below.)

The more the merrier.

This month we should have IRC set up within an hour of the start of the
meeting. We'll also be working to get VOIP going. That will be even
better at making it great for virtual attendees.

No matter if it is cost savings, time savings, or you only want to be
involved in some part(s) of the meeting. Maybe a college student
doesn't
have the resources to travel, even merely from San Francisco to
Berkeley. NO PROBLEM! Join with us with IRC & VOIP.

In the near future we'll make an effort to set up more local meetings -
especially at UC campuses, & perhaps also at all college campuses in
California, & everywhere.

I think group meetings offer many benefits over merely joining online,
but I believe in letting the individual make the choice.

So:
1) Come to the U. C. Berkeley location meeting, or
2) Join with us from your home, or
3) Set up your own local meeting anywhere - A college campus would be
great.

It's your choice - have it your way! :)

=====================================================================
=====  3) LOCAL SPECIFICS
===== LOCAL UCB BerkeleyTIP MEETING DETAILS: =====

===== LOCATION: Free Speech Cafe outside veranda, at Moffitt Library
http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=37.872496,-122.261155&spn=0.000578,0.000633&t=h&z=20

Watch the BerkeleyTIP group page for last minute changes, such as if we
need to move to another location. I'll post signs if we do move
locations.

===== VIDEOS: I'll bring the videos on my laptop, so no need for you to
bring them on yours.

===== HARDWARE: BE SELF SUFFICIENT - BRING ALL EQUIPMENT YOU NEED
Do bring a laptop with microphone headset, wifi
capable, ethernet cable & ethernet hub/swith if you have one,
power cord & extension cord.

===== POTLUCK - Not for this meeting,
Due to my main focus on the ProgrammingParty VOIP effort.

===== INSTALLFEST - IF YOU WANT HELP on any topic, please email the
local BerkeleyTIP group mailing list with a "Installfest help wanted"
message. Please state what you'd like help with, so we can tell you if
we should be able to help you with that.

ATTENDEES WHO CAN HELP on the installfest - Please respond to any
"Installfest help wanted" messages posted to list indicating if you can
help out with that. Thank you.

===== PROBABILISTIC RSVP: PLEASE make a probabilistic RSVP, if you
think there is a >=75 % chance you'll attend, using the subject:
"BerkeleyTIP RSVP % = ##" where ## = 75 or 99, choosing the closest # to
the probability you think you'll attend.

RSVP to my email address john_re at fastmail dot US, or join the group
mailing list & RSVP there if you'd like to tell the group what you are
interested in regarding the meeting.

No RSVP is _necessary_, but it will help us to get an early warning if
we might need to get a larger meeting location. -- Please come even if
you aren't able to RSVP!

I hope to see you there. :)

===== LOCAL WEATHER as of Friday says: Saturday Showers likely. Highs
in the upper 50s to mid 60s. West winds 10 to 20 mph.
http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?brand=sfgate&query=berkeley%2C+ca
So, we might be moving inside. Perhaps Soda, Cory, Evans, Dwinelle. The
cafe veranda has a cover, so we'll be ok if it is only a tiny drizzle.
Bring a jacket. Often such days warm up & get sunny in Berkeley.

===== CAR PARKING - Best to park below/downhill/west from campus for
this meeting. There will be a football game at the stadium at the top
of campus. Park below campus & it's a mere 7 minute walk to the meeting
at the Free Speech Movement Cafe at Moffitt Undergrad Library.

There is a UC parking garage at the foot of campus one block south of
University Ave., at Addison & Oxford.

There are also two aproximately 6 story parking garages in downtown
Berkeley.

Or, you might be able to find free street parking North or NorthWest of
campus maybe between 2 & 10 blocks from campus. Be SURE to CHECK THE
PARKING SIGNS ALONG THE SIDEWALK to ensure it is OK to park for more
than 2 hours without a local parking permit car sticker.

===== BART - Berkeley Downtown stop. 7 minute walk to Free Speech Cafe
at Moffitt Undergrad Library.

1) Dimdim.com ? - VOIP conference in Firefox + Adobe Flash
2) or try Ekiga? or Asterisk?

for this meeting. We will be working together to get this capability
working for the global meeting.

===== PROGRAMMING PARTY
Work on getting VOIP working between meeting locations,
including individual participants from home.

We'll be trying & testing:
1) Dimdim.com - One to Many (1-N) net meeting service using
     Firefox & Adobe Flash
2) Asterisk - Red Hat Infrastructure team has new VOIP capability,
     I think using Asterisk & donated hosting from Digium???
     We'll investigate this technology.
3) Ekiga - Can this be used for 1-N? N-N? How? Server needed? What SW?

===== JOIN FROM HOME - NEW ; OR, SETUP A LOCAL MEETING

NEW this meeting, we INVITE everyone to JOIN FROM HOME if you wish.
This is an easy way to get started with the meeting.

Or, you can organize a LOCAL MEETING & get together with your friends.
Having a meeting with friends can generate much more learning, progress,
community & fun. You could have a local potluck meal, too.

A GREAT PLACE to have a local meeting is at a COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY.
It can be at a WiFi cafe.
It's great to INVITE the STUDENTS there to attend
- it HELPS them LEARN about Linux & Free Software, and
- it keeps the community UP TO DATE on the NEW THINGS STUDENTS are
DOING.
