[NBLUG/talk] Samba problems

Hello.
I wonder if anyone has seen this problem with samba.
I have an Ubuntu Hardy server that I'm trying to access with Vista Home
Premium. Each time I try to do anything with Windows Explorer, I seem
to get another instance of smbd started, but the connections never work.
It seems to work like the code keys we used in Viet Nam. Always one
off. At this point I have a stack that looks like this:
   398 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/smbd -D
   417 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/smbd -D
   438 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/smbd -D
   458 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/smbd -D
   613 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/smbd -D
  1213 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/smbd -D
  1248 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/smbd -D
  1419 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/smbd -D
  2113 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/smbd -D
  2911 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/smbd -D
  3714 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/smbd -D
  4476 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/smbd -D
  5227 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/smbd -D
  6093 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/smbd -D
  6876 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/smbd -D
  7703 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/smbd -D
  8519 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/smbd -D
  9302 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/smbd -D
10069 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/smbd -D
10956 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/smbd -D
11696 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/smbd -D
12446 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/smbd -D
13049 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/smbd -D
13071 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/smbd -D
13094 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/smbd -D
13113 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/smbd -D
13774 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/smbd -D
13798 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/smbd -D
13818 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/smbd -D
14692 pts/16 R+ 0:00 grep .mbd
32084 ? Ss 0:00 /usr/sbin/nmbd -D
32086 ? Ss 0:00 /usr/sbin/smbd -D
32089 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/smbd -D
32104 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/smbd -D
32211 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/smbd -D
And nothing works. I can't find any reference with google to this
kind of problem.

I did the registry hack of changing the 3 to 1 at some unknown place.

My system passes all the samba tests, as nearly as I can tell. And
I've never had this problem with Windows 2000.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
