800x600? Aww. Quit yer cryin'.

;-)

I have a monitor whose EDID reports 640x350. Now *that's* messed
up. The monitor is really capable of 1024x768. You can check your
monitor's EDID info with the read-edid tools.

Here's a thread that deals with the problem:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Resolution#Adding undetected resolutions
which should help.

Some monitors are actually capable of being flashed with new
EDID info. If you're lucky, you:
  1) have such a monitor
  2) have somehow learned the procedure for flashing the EDID
  3) have acquired a working binary EDID file
For example, here's how to do it with a Samsung SyncMaster 215tw:

It's a long shot, but fixing your monitor's EDID info (if you
can do it) is probably the best solution, since you should never
have to deal with wrong resolutions ever again, no matter what
system you hook it up to.

Good luck,

A.
