Damn, this thing replies odd.

Well I started all over in slow diagnostic Walter mode vs panicked crazy Walter mode. (why does this new droid say "DROID"? sorry about that, it's a little unnerving). Anyway I started unplugging and plugging things in. I found that I could get the system to boot by specifically selecting the top raid1 drive using the boot menu. The other drive would not boot. So I carefully configured the bios to boot that drive and it worked. The server is now up. I should figure out how to copy over the boot part from the first drive to the second drive. I think it was grub 1.5.

I also set up a daemon for mdadm and am now getting this email every 1800 seconds:

'This is an automatically generated mail message from mdadm
'running on hydra.corporate-image.com
'
'A DegradedArray event had been detected on md device /dev/md0.
'
'Faithfully yours, etc.

Overall this is much better. I'm not sure if I should be worried about 'DegradedArray'. Here is the output from mdadm --detail /dev/md0:

/dev/md0:
