Don't some of the chromebooks run Linux?

Since you later mentioned e-bay -- you won't have any problems finding 
something and you should be able to run a gui with no problems.  I have 
a couple of the Acer Aspire-One netbooks that work fine with ubuntu 12.

One of them (a D270) had a power connector that broke, but I took it 
apart and soldered the part back together.  I'm writing from it.  It's 
been fine for 6 months now.

Another (D250) got dropped and the display mounts are bent but it works 
fine.

I did splurge and buy 64Gb SSD's for them, but those are getting cheap 
now days.
