[NBLUG/talk] talk Digest, Vol 195, Issue 1

Hi Brad,

The mailing list setup predates me, but I think the intent is that
people who just want to see meeting announcements, and don't want to
see any other random discussion can subscribe to the announce list.

I'm planning to post meeting announcements to both lists, so you should
see everything if you're subscribed to talk. Or you can subscribe to
both, just in case (at the cost of one or two extra emails per month).

Not sure if you're already aware, but there's also discussion on the
IRC channel (#nblug on libera.chat).

The lack of certain apps is definitely the biggest downside (IMO) to a
google-less LineageOS install. Depending on what you're looking for,
f-droid.org is an open source Android app store, but of course that
doesn't help with proprietary stuff. You can get many of the free
(-as-in-beer) apps from alternate sources (apkmirror.com, apkpure.com,
...), but those always seem a little dodgy to me. And any apps that
require various google framework stuff (Uber and Lyft are going to
require maps, for example) presumably won't run anyway.

I ended up installing Lineage + gapps on my old phone, with a cheap
MVNO SIM card. I leave that turned off most of the time, but keep it
around in case I'm planning to use Lyft or something.
