/dev/ttyS1 is com2, which she said was the modem, so that's bad. 
Maybe /dev/ttyS0 (com1), or /dev/psaux (ps/2 mouse port).

What is /dev/mouse linked to now?  What are the major and minor device
numbers if it isn't a symlink?
(if you don't know what that means, then just paste the output of

   ls -l /dev/mouse

into a message here.

Maybe you mean /dev/ttyS0?  but if the modem is on com2 (in dos/Win) then
you should use /dev/ttyS1.  Check the file 
   /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ppp0 
to see what it lists as the modem port.
