They could _and should_ have had a less official version number even 
_without_ communicating their intentions to the GCC steering committee:
They could have called it gcc-redhat-2.96 (and called it via the obvious
symlink).  

But they shouldn't have named and numbered it the way they did.  Other
distributions have done the same sort of thing:  That's not right,
either.
