[NBLUG/talk] Another hard disk bites the dust!!!

I received the replacement hard disk in the mail today. I'm using the
same 'cpio' trick as before (but with the --sparse option!), and so far
it seems to be working properly.

My new ambition is to construct a RAID-4 array with a mix of internal
ATA hard disks and external USB or FireWire hard disks (since new disks
could then be added as needed with almost no fuss and minimal risk of
data loss). Either one internal ATA 250GB disk and an unspecified
number of external 250GB disks, or an internal RAID-0 array of four
250GB disks which is part of a RAID-4 array that also includes an
unspecified number of external 1TB disks (in either case, the internal
drive(s) form the parity device for the array). But realistically, I
probably won't be able to afford such a system for 10 years, at which
time I'd buy all the parts real cheap at the Computer Recycling Center
(when I could have bought a new 2TB drive at CompUSA instead).
