Disclaimer, I work for DriveSavers as the resident code monkey, so the
physical side of things isn't my forte.

It sounds like physical damage occurred. If that's the case, dd_rescue and
the like might be able to recover the data, but they may also cause further
damage, making a full recovery harder or outright impossible. I also
recommend not using the drive anymore until your client decides what they
want to do, since it may cause more damage depending on what's wrong with
it.

We offer free evaluations, so the guys upstairs can figure out exactly what
went wrong and if it's recoverable before your client pays anything. We're
expensive, but we might just be your client's best bet.
